Pets will give thanks for homemade treats!

This holiday season, keep pet treats on-hand to stop guests from slipping unhealthy food underneath the table. Why not make up a special batch of homemade treats for your furry little one?

Here are a couple of recipes to get you started:

Cat Treats

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup skim milk*
1/2 can (6-ounce) oil-packed tuna
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 egg

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray. Place tuna in a bowl and flake chunks apart before mashing well with a fork. Add the flour to the tuna and continue to mash and mix with fork. Pour milk over the flour-tuna mixture, then add in the oil and the egg. Stir together with fork until ingredients are thoroughly mixed together. Scoop out a portion of dough with a teaspoon and then divide each portion in two before rolling them into balls. Place tuna dough balls onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Allow treats to cool before serving.

*Some cats are lactose intolerant. If that’s an issue, substitute skim milk

Dog Treats

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Whisk together all ingredients in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.
